Industry Capabilities

The volume of Australian wine exports in the 12 months to the end of May 2008 totalled 724 million litres and a total of $2.8 billion. Production of wine comes from 170,000 hectares and is exported to over 100 countries. Australia is currently the sixth largest wine producer and the fourth largest wine exporter.

In 2006 Australia supplied more wine to the UK, Ireland, Singapore and New Zealand than any other country. In the same year Australia was the second largest supplier to the USA and Canada.

In recent years more than 430 million litres of wine has been consumed in Australia per year, growing at a steady 4% a year while at the same time beer consumption is declining per person.

 


Australian wines are considered to be amoung the best in the world.

Target Markets

The United Kingdom is currently the biggest export market in value and volume terms, taking 272 million litres of Australian wine, valued at $906 million, in the year to the end of May. The United States (190 million litres at $802 million) was next, followed by Canada (48 million litres at $274 million).

Australian wines are enjoyed the world over with the top markets being the US, UK and Continental Europe. Wine export to Japan has increased in recent years to over one million cases in 2006. China is also a rapidly growing market for Australian wine exports.
